Description
E1208, also known as polyvinylpyrrolidone-vinyl acetate copolymer (PVP/VA), is a food additive belonging to the category of 'others'. It is a synthetic polymer formed by the copolymerization of N-vinylpyrrolidone and vinyl acetate.
Industrially, it is obtained by solution or emulsion polymerization using radical initiators such as peroxides. The final product is a white or slightly yellowish powder, soluble in water and polar organic solvents. Its physicochemical properties include film-forming ability, adhesiveness, and stabilization of suspensions. In the food industry, its main function is to act as a coating agent, film former, and stabilizer.
Historically, it was approved in the European Union after evaluations by EFSA and WHO. EFSA established that it is not necessary to set an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) due to its low absorption and toxicity. WHO, through JECFA, also considered it safe.
Regarding food safety, it is considered a safe additive under authorized conditions of use. On the label, it must appear as 'polyvinylpyrrolidone-vinyl acetate copolymer' or its E number. No significant adverse effects in humans have been reported, and its use is permitted in food supplements and certain processed foods.
E1208 is mainly used in the food industry as a coating agent and film former. It is found in food supplements, especially tablets and capsules, to improve their appearance and facilitate swallowing. It is also used in confectionery products, such as chewing gum and candies, to provide a shiny and protective layer.
In the Spanish market, it is common in brands of vitamin supplements and in some industrial bakery products. The authorized limits under Regulation EC 1333/2008 vary by food category; for example, in food supplements up to 100 mg/kg is allowed. The FDA classifies it as GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) for certain uses, while in Japan its use is permitted in processed foods. Comparatively, European regulations are more restrictive regarding maximum amounts.
Toxicological studies conducted by EFSA and JECFA have not documented significant adverse effects associated with the consumption of E1208 at authorized doses. It is a high molecular weight polymer that is not absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, so it is eliminated unchanged in feces. No genotoxic, carcinogenic, or reproductive toxicity effects have been identified. In sensitive populations, such as people with allergies, no specific adverse reactions have been reported.
No interactions with medications are known. EFSA concluded that it is not necessary to establish an ADI, as dietary exposure is low and does not pose a health risk.
In summary, E1208 is considered safe for the consumer under authorized conditions of use.
