Description
E1206, also known as Neutral Methacrylate Copolymer, is a synthetic food additive belonging to the 'Other' category under European regulations. It is a polymer formed by the copolymerization of methacrylic acid esters, mainly methyl methacrylate and butyl methacrylate, in proportions that yield a neutral copolymer (without ionizable groups). Industrially, it is obtained by emulsion or suspension polymerization using radical initiators and surfactants, followed by drying and milling processes to obtain a fine powder.
Its physicochemical properties include: appearance as a white or slightly yellowish powder, insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents, high molecular weight, and a glass transition temperature around 50-70 °C. It forms flexible and transparent films, making it useful as a coating agent in foods. Its main function is as a film former (glazing agent) and stabilizer, protecting foods from moisture and improving their appearance.
Historically, it was approved in the European Union as a food additive in 2014, following evaluation by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). EFSA, in its 2010 opinion, established that there are no safety concerns at the proposed use levels, and no numerical Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI) was assigned, as the estimated exposure is low and does not pose a health risk.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has also evaluated it through the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), which concluded that there are no safety issues. Regarding labeling, it must appear in the ingredient list as 'Neutral Methacrylate Copolymer' or with its E number E1206.
The overall safety assessment is positive: it is considered a safe additive for consumers under authorized conditions of use. No significant adverse effects have been reported in toxicological studies, and its use is permitted in a variety of food products, mainly dietary supplements and coated foods.
E1206 is mainly used as a coating agent (glazing agent) and stabilizer in foods. According to Regulation EC 1333/2008, it is authorized in the European Union for use in food supplements (capsules, tablets) and in coated foods, such as confectionery products, dried fruits, and some meat products. Maximum use levels vary by category: for example, in dietary supplements up to 10,000 mg/kg (1%) is allowed, while in other foods the quantum satis principle applies (sufficient amount to achieve the desired effect).
In the Spanish market, it can be found in vitamin and mineral supplements, coatings of gummy candies, and some industrial bakery products. Comparatively, the US FDA has not approved this additive for food use, although it is used in pharmaceutical products. In Japan, its use is permitted in certain processed foods. EFSA has assessed that dietary exposure is low and does not exceed safe levels.
Toxicological studies conducted by EFSA and JECFA have not documented significant adverse effects associated with the consumption of E1206 at authorized doses. Acute, subchronic, and chronic toxicity tests in animals have been performed without observing relevant toxic effects. No evidence of genotoxicity, carcinogenicity, or reproductive toxicity has been found.
The biological mechanism is based on the copolymer not being absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract due to its high molecular weight, being excreted unchanged in feces. No specific sensitive populations have been identified, although individuals with allergies to methacrylates (used in dentistry) could theoretically react, but no documented cases exist. No interactions with medications are known.
The conclusion of EFSA and WHO is that E1206 is safe for consumers under authorized conditions of use, with no need to establish a numerical ADI. In summary, no side effects are expected in the general population.
